September 08: Remote fit

Jeans hunting is widely considered to be the most excruciating shopping experience on the planet. Here’s an alternative: makeyourownjeans.com.

This online custom jeans store takes eight measurements (with detailed instructions on DIY measuring) and presents you with a raft of options: Choose stretch or classic denim, and then select the wash, weight and color followed by the style. These vary from maternity and Brazilian to more conservative boot-cut and straight-leg. After that you can browse the add-on patches, embroidery and pocket designs (monograms anyone?). They’ll even custom rip your jeans if you want! The basic cost is a mere $48, with style changes at $10 and add-ons costing $2-5. Expect to receive your new dungarees in three to five weeks.

I tried the service out, basing some measurements on a pair of jeans I already had and liked. When my jeans arrived, they did fit, though not quite how I expected them to. The company doesn’t give refunds, but does replace jeans free of charge. For women of unusual sizes, this could be a great solution to the painful jeans hunt ritual.
