The Board of Visitors convened last week at UVA, and while there was no big news coming out of it on par with the $100 million donation by Frank Batten last year, several facilities were christened as a result. The 11th Street parking garage has been named (drum roll!): the 11th Street Garage. Meanwhile, the parking deck completed on Culbreth Road next to Culbreth Theatre shall forever be known as: Culbreth Road Garage. Either parking decks aren’t worthy of a person’s name or no person is worthy enough to lend a name to a parking deck. Apparently, only streets can do the job.
But UVA is just fine bequeathing the names of people to streets. Even after Chief Financial Officer Leonard Sandridge retires in the coming years, we can all cherish his gruff effectiveness as we travel on Leonard Sandridge Drive. And now we can cherish outgoing nursing school Dean Jeanette Lancaster after she steps down this summer—UVA had the City of Charlottesville change the name of 15th Street SW this month to Jeanette Lancaster Way. Which at least holds out hope, down the line, for a Jeanette Lancaster Way Garage.
