Susan McCulley |
Teaching The Nia Technique (a workout fusing dance, martial arts, and yoga) since 2000, Susan leads retreats to exotic locales such as Peru and Costa Rica. She says her favorite trips are the ones she shares with her husband Frank: “I often tell him that being stuck in an airport in Cleveland with him is as much fun as going to the Taj with anybody else!”
When it comes to jet-setting for fitness-focused vacays, she tries to travel light and still find ways to keep her body happy— not always easy in a world full of carry-on restrictions and lackluster airplane meals.—Lucy Zhou
iPod with Nia and BodyPUMP music
Traveling gives Susan a chance to catch up on stockpiled tunes to pick out music for her classes. “I love having time to just listen to music when I travel,” she says.
USANA vitamins
Taking vitamins on the road (Mega Antioxidants, Chelated Minerals, Biomega, Proflavonal 90) makes Susan feel remarkably better. Though lugging big bottles can be cumbersome, she usually just “loads up little baggies with vitamins” and packs them with her for that extra boost.
1 Young Living Essential Oil (Joy or Grapefruit)
“These are really multipurpose,” says Susan. “They’re therapeutic and relaxing, but I can also use them for scent.” Plus, the little vials are conveniently travel size.
Now 100 Percent Pure Jojoba Oil
Susan loves to use this lighter oil on her face and hands, and even her hair. “Just the littlest amount goes a long way,” she says. “So it’s great for travel.”
Roasted unsalted almonds
Purchased in bulk from IY and packed with energy, these are “so easy to travel with!” Susan declares. “I can have a big bag of them and they’ll last me for the week.” She also likes Kashi bars for tasty convenience, plus green apples and carrots for healthy food on the go.
Burt’s Bees Citrus and Ginger Root Body Wash
“My latest addition—my body and I LOVE it!” Susan says, admitting that she’s a bit of a fiend for products with a fun fragrance.
Water bottle
Since flying can be so dehydrating, Susan makes sure to drink plenty of water. “I bring my empty water bottle and refill it,” she says—a smart tip to work around TSA liquid restrictions and still get your H2O.
Tom’s of Maine Deodorant
“My body doesn’t like most antiperspirants,” Susan says, but she finds that this deodorant suits her, keeping her fresh through a day of hard workouts.
Aura Glow Almond Scent
“It’s got an actual almond in the bottle!” says Susan. Since Nia involves dancing barefoot, she makes sure to rub this on her feet every day.
Jason Naturals Biotin Conditioner
Susan raves: “This keeps my hair really soft even if I’m out in the sun all the time. Almost every hotel in the world has shampoo available, so I just refill my travel container with this to have with me all the time.”
