A few things to look forward to. First, check out this week’s Feedback column for the inside scoop on how some of Random Row Books’ recent attention from the city could spell trouble for some local bands.
- Vinegar Hill will host a screening of Samson and Delilah: True Love tonight, a film about two aboriginal teenagers who steal a car to escape the isolated life of an Australian village—and all of its trappings, like boredom and rampant gasoline huffing. It won last year’s Camera d’Or (that’s the Golden Camera to you) at last year’s Cannes Film Festival and boasts an all-too-impressive 100% on Rottentomatoes.com Tomatometer. In all, an excellent chance to put a real-time face to the work we’ve enjoyed at the Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection. That begins at 7pm; get your details here.
- Also on deck this week is LOOKbetween, the Festival of the Photograph’s off-year gathering, which I’ve been anxiously awaiting. On Friday and Saturday, about a hundred up-and-coming photographers will congregate on a farm about a half hour outside of town to share their work. Tickets, which are $50 for both days and include dinner, look to be still available. Look here next week for a recap of the gathering.
- Opening on Friday at Les Yeux du Monde is Sam Abell’s "Amazonia," which has been a major source of excitement around here. Abell is a Crozet-based photographer mostly known for his work with National Geographic. For this exhibition Abell spent time in photographing wildlife in the headwaters of the Amazon, and the results look stunning—where else in town can you see a sloth mother dragging her spawn towards a placid river? Check out the opening on Friday at 5:30 on Friday.
Reports on all this and much more coming throughout the week.
