UPDATE: May 7, 4:29pm
According to the Washington Post, George Huguely, who is charged with Love’s death, attacked a teammate in Febraury after a night of partying. Dom Starsia, the team’s coach, told the players about the incident and disciplined both members of the team, but details concerning disciplinary action or whether Starsia reported the incident to other UVA officials is not yet available. A former lacrosse player told reporters that Huguely heard his teammate had kissed Love, who was dating Huguely at that time, and attacked him.
The Post writes that Starsia was not available for comment; both the Post and USA Today report that Starsia’s father died today at age 86.
As reported earlier, UVA President John Casteen and Governor Bob McDonnell plan to discuss legislature that would require police to notify the University of students’ arrests. Now, Commonwealth’s Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli is proposing to review and write changes to current law concerning the same issues, in the wake of the death of UVA fourth-year and lacrosse player Yeardley Love. Cuccinelli hopes to make recommendations for the next General Assembly session, or earlier in the case of a special session, according to the Washington Post.
"This is an area you can expect our office to take a leading role in reviewing and adjusting if we need to," Cuccinelli said. "My office is already reviewing what could have made this less likely in the event that we have a special session. I do think you can expect to see some legal changes, changes to our statutes, as result of this tragedy."
UVA President John Casteen will meet with Governor Bob McDonnell to discuss legislation that would require police to report students’ arrests to the University.
The Baltimore Sun reports that McDonnell reached out to Casteen after learning that the school’s administration had no knowledge of suspect George Huguely’s convictions for public intoxication, swearing and resisting arrest in Lexington in November 2008.
Huguely is currently being held at the Albemarle Charlottesville Regional Jail, and is charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of UVA student Yeardley Love.
"The governor wants to study and fully consider every possible idea that could help prevent such a senseless crime from taking place in the future," Stacey Johnson, McDonnell’s press secretary, told the newspaper. "He looks forward to hearing the president’s insights and thoughts on the issue."
Interestingly, the Lexington incident was not Huguely’s first only run-in with police. According to the article, in December 2008, Huguely’s father reported that his son jumped into the ocean from the family boat, intending to swim to shore, after a verbal altercation. George Huguely was picked up with another boat before the police arrived on scene.
