Freshman phenom Monica Wright, a starting guard for the UVA women’s basketball team, shoots a fadeaway over a helpless Wake Forest player during the Cav’s 77-70 home victory on January 11. Wright finished with 15 points in the win, helping UVA snap a two-game losing streak. The Cavs took the energy from that game for a clutch overtime performance against Boston College on January 14—Wright hit the final three pointer, giving UVA a 65-63 victory and bringing their record to 12-5 overall, 2-1 in conference. Of course, the ACC is particularly top heavy this year—Maryland, UNC and Duke were respectively ranked Nos. 1, 2 and 3 in the nation at press time (though Maryland fell to Duke last weekend)—so the real test is whether Virginia can knock off one of those top dogs. They get their next shot January 19 at Maryland.
