I know what you’re thinking: Sons of Bill have already hit the big time. Surely there is some sort of limo-driving Frankie Sharp who tosses cash at the country road warriors when it’s time to record an album.
Not so. "More and more costs fall upon bands to produce and release new music," reads the band’s (nearly successful) Kickstarter campaign to raise $20,000 for a third album, which they’re now recording with Cracker’s David Lowery at his Sound of Music studio in Richmond. "When there is no record label to pay for recording, mixing, and promoting of a record, it falls on us to raise the money through touring, which is a big part of why we’ve been on the road constantly the last two years."
And as things go with Kickstarter, you get a ‘lil something for chipping in. Those who donate get to download A Rock and Roll Christmas Spectacular: Live at the Jefferson Theater.
If you want your contribution to go further (percentage-wise), the local power-pop team Borrowed Beams of Light has 13 days to raise about $1,500 towards a $3,000 goal. The group is looking to fund a new album "loosely based on a 500 year old, vellum manuscript known as "The Voynich Manuscript," said to be the worlds most mysterious manuscript. (How do you measure that?) Donate $200, as two people already have, and local screenprinter extraordinaire will include an artist’s rendition of your face in the album art.
