Green reads after the barbecue

Happy summer, greenies. I know the solstice is still a few weeks away, but who are we kidding? I heard the first cricket of the year this weekend, and we put out our basil and cucumber plants. It’s all sweat and sunshine from here.

Some reads to get your season going:

First, from the Organic Consumers Association, a pretty strong indictment of Whole Foods’ anti-union activities. You may have read about this before, but this article really drives home the unsettling nature of the issue. Whole Foods employees, I know you read this blog, so please weigh in.

In that same But-I-thought-I-was-being-a-good-consumer category, this story about the nefarious effects of soybean farming might be a nasty surprise.

Think you need a car to get around? This guy begs to differ. He’s traveling across the entire nation without one, using instead a panoply of transport modes including airboat, kayak and train. As you can see on his blog, he just came through Charlottesville, where he rode a unicycle. Sort of.

Apocalyptic thinkers, here’s one for you. It’s a brief rundown of some of the things that would happen if humanity disappeared from the earth. Number 4 (feral housecats killing raccoons?) is especially wild, and if you’re just looking to get depressed, check out number 6 (35,000 years until lead pollution dissipates).

And finally, to end on an upbeat note, check out this piece, in which ABC News gets clued in to our local fight over the Wilderness Wal-Mart. Not that it’s not a serious issue, but Robert Duvall’s bumbling quote on the first page is good for a laugh—especially in contrast to his very distinguished photo on the second page.
