Governor McDonnell endorses Republican candidate in crowded Congressional race

Yesterday, Governor Bob McDonnell endorsed one of seven candidates vying for the Second District Congressional chair—a race every bit as populous as the one in Virginia’s Fifth District. Does this mean he’s ready to back a Republican candidate against incumbent Democrat Tom Perriello? According to the National Journal’s Hotline On Call blog…no.

The blog notes that "while chatting with reporters yesterday, McDonnell said he had no plans to get involved in the race against Perriello." Asked whether he planned to endorse Virginia Senator Robert Hurt (who dominated first quarter candidate fundraising totals), McDonnell responded that he tries "not to be involved in competitive primaries," but made an exception to endorse Republican Scott Rigel’s run against Republican Congressman Glenn Nye.
