If you haven’t yet seen negative ads against Tom Perriello, get ready. With less than three weeks until election day, Fifth District Congressman Virgil Goode has more than double the amount of spending money of his Democratic challenger, according to financial disclosures filed October 15 with the Federal Election Commission (FEC).
Though Perriello turned in another strong quarter, raising more than $400,000 from July to September, Goode came in with $530,000 during that period. Goode outspent Perriello by almost $70,000 during the quarter, and went into October with $686,000 cash on hand compared to Perriello’s $321,000. Both have already spent close to $1 million.

Even though he was beaten out this quarter by Goode, a 12-year incumbent with a seat on the House Appropriations Committee, Perriello can take pride in raising $1.3 million to date, more than Goode’s last challenger, Al Weed, raised in both his attempts to unseat the Republican from Rocky Mount.
“I am so grateful for all the $5 and $10 donations that have come in from around the district,” said Tom Perriello in a press release. “We’ve proven that a people-powered campaign can go toe-to-toe with an entrenched incumbent funded by the special interests.”
Tom Perriello can still smile knowing he’s raised $1.3 million—more than Al Weed raised in both his bids combined. |
“I was pleased that we were able to outraise Mr. Perriello this quarter,” said Goode through a campaign spokesperson. “I am especially grateful to the contributors from the Fifth District who once again outpaced the large number of New Yorkers and other out-of-staters who contributed to my opponent.”
Virginians made up $547,000 of Goode’s funding compared to $512,000 for Perriello. However, 23 percent of Goode’s funding comes from PACs, while those contributions make up only 5 percent of Perriello’s funding.
