Get on the bus, Google-style

Always wanted to take the bus to Barracks but never figured out which one to take or when it arrives? The city’s Charlottesville Transit Service (CTS) and the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT) have partnered up with Google to provide a new way of using public transit services.

All CTS routes and their accompanying schedules are now available online in a trip format through Google Transit trip planner. Let’s say we need to go from the C-VILLE offices on the Downtown Mall to the Barnes & Noble on Barracks Road: The trip planner provides step-by-step transit directions, complete with fares.

The partnership, at no cost to the city or to DRPT, is a statewide initiative focused on raising awareness of public transit. Virginia is the first state to have the majority of its public transportation providers on Google Transit.

Kristen Gleason, program coordinator of marketing for CTS, said that ridership continues to rise. Passenger boarding has increased 140,000 over last year, and CTS could pass the 1.9 million mark this year.

The trip planner can be accessed at google.com/transit or charlottesville.org/transit.
