With the two-year controversy over the second vehicular crossing at the east end of the Downtown Mall having finally ended in December, it took comparatively no time for the city Planning Commission to affirm February 26 that the crossing should remain at Fourth Street rather than move to Fifth Street. Commissioners did complain that too many cars are parking for extended periods of time on the Mall at the crossing. Jim Tolbert, director of Neighborhood and Development Services, said that a parking study will be completed in the next three or four months that will comprehensively address the street parking situation throughout the city.
