Engineering an art gallery at Thornton Hall [PHOTOS]

This morning, I stopped by Thornton Hall, home to UVA’s School of Engineering and Applied Science as well as the newest art gallery on the UVA Grounds. The gallery is the product of talks between assistant professor (and author of the recently harvested Notes from the Ground) Benjamin Cohen and local artist Katelyn Sack, whose work now adorns the walls of a second floor landing. Photos below:

I told Cohen that the exhibition is an ideal first pairing of space and strengths: Sack’s work often occupies five or six non-gallery venues at a time, all alike in their unlikeliness as a space for visual art. (I finally interviewed her after encountering a few paintings in the hallway outside of the Barnes & Noble restroom.) Consider yourselves prodded to drop by Thornton and see the work and the room for yourself.

All I ask in return? Tell me about your favorite non-gallery visual art venues in town. Leave your comments below.
