Early in-person voting for both party primaries is underway in Virginia through August 1.
In Charlottesville, votes can be cast on weekdays between 8:30am and 4:30pm. at the Office of Voter Registration, located on the first floor of City Hall Annex at 120 Seventh St. NE. Sunday voting runs from noon to 5pm on July 19 and 26.
Saturday voting in both Charlottesville and Albemarle is available from 8:30am to 5pm on July 25 and August 1. Both localities will be closed Friday, July 3.
Albemarle County residents can cast an early in-person ballot at the Fifth Street County Office Building from 8:30am to 5pm Monday through Friday. Sunday voting for the county will be held July 19 and 26 from 11am to 4pm.
More information on voting is available at elections.virginia.gov. The deadline to register to vote is July 24. Primary election day is August 4.
Haas officially out
Former superintendent Matthew Haas is out at Albemarle County Public Schools, with his resignation effective June 20.
In a press release announcing his exit, ACPS said Haas will receive his salary and benefits through June 2027—including a previously approved raise and an $800 bonus. The 3.75 percent raise goes into effect on July 1, bringing his salary to $257,165.67.
Haas’ contract with the county included severance pay and benefits to be made available “in the event of resignation or termination without cause.”
Before Haas officially left, ACPS nominated Assistant Superintendent of Instruction Chandra Hayes to serve as acting superintendent on June 17. Her appointment to the temporary role is contingent upon a vote by the school board.
