Couric Center going up! [April 12]

CBS Evening News anchor Katie Couric attended the groundbreaking of the Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center, the $74 million facility planned for the corner of Jefferson Park Avenue and Lee Street and named for her sister, the late Virginia senator. Couric joined Governor Tim Kaine and UVA President John Casteen for the hour-long, invitation-only event, during which the Cavalier Marching Band played the “1812 Overture” while an excavator “invaded” a wall of the West Parking Garage currently at the site. Interesting double-or-nothing bet for you media wonks gambling on Couric’s rumored career jump: The Wall Street Journal reported that Couric “is likely to leave the network well before her contract expires in 2011”—the same year that the center is slated to open.
