Three Cavs drafted for MLB

Three UVA baseball players have been selected in this year’s Major League Baseball Draft, reports the Daily Progress. David Adams, who played second base for UVA, was picked up by the New York Yankees in the third round of the draft. In the fifth round the Baltimore Orioles picked up shortstop Greg Miclat and the Atlanta Braves selected pitcher Jacob Thompson. The players, all third-years, will pass up their final year of eligibility at UVA once they sign contracts with their respective teams.

Meals on Wheels feels pressure at the pump

Meals on Wheels of Charlottesville- Albemarle is finding it difficult to recruit volunteer drivers for its meal delivery service, according to a press release sent out today. The program is trying to keep costs down by splitting delivery routes, but that requires an increase in volunteers.

Area to get 1,000 employees plus “contractor tail”

Northern Albemarle County is getting at least 1,000 new jobs in the coming years, and probably a lot more. Army Colonel Mark Moffatt gave the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors an update today about the expansion at the National Ground Intelligence Center (NGIC), almost doubling the number of employees who work at the facility on Boulders Road off Route 29 North.

Updated 12:39pm: Man charged with murder of 11-year-old on 6 1/2 Street

Eleven year old Azizi Damar Booth was found shot and killed in the kitchen of a house in the 300 block of 6 1/2 Street just after midnight this morning, according to a Charlottesville Police Department press release. Police were directed to Booth by 23 year old Rueben Lewis III, who they found shot. Booth was pronounced dead at the scene. Lewis was taken to the University of Virginia Medical Center with non life-threatening injuries.

Council supports water plan but asks for dredging

City Council unanimously reaffirmed its support for the long term water supply plan last night, though it added a request for the Rivanna Water and Sewer Authority (RWSA) to undertake a maintenance dredging study for the South Fork Rivanna Reservoir and increase water conservation efforts.
