Virgil Goode must be feeling some heat from his Democratic challenger for the Fifth District. He took his fight against Tom Perriello to the airwaves this weekend with negative ads that features a black and white distorted image of Perriello with a beard (which he doesn’t currently sport) to go with voice overs about his “liberal†polices. The version playing in Lynchburg and Roanoke markets calls the Albemarle native a “New York Lawyer†with “Liberal New York Policies†who opposes drilling and the so-called marriage amendment while (gasp!) supporting comprehensive immigration reform.
Well, the first debate is in the can. The two seemed pretty evenly matched in terms of debating skills. I present to you the notes I took while watching:

Governor Tim Kaine announced yesterday that funding cuts to the state’s public schools will be delayed until next year. The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports that Kaine wants to give local governments time to make adjustments in view of the cuts that will most likely be put into effect in 2010.
Commonwealth’s Attorney Denise Lunsford announced today that the state will not pursue charges against Stacy Berry due to new evidence.

No, I do not refer to cap-and-trade systems for controlling industrial emissions. I speak of an ad I spotted last week for the eco-fabulous Richmond grocer Ellwood Thompson’s, which is offering customers 25 cents off their bills if they walk, bike or take the bus to the store. It’s called the EnviroCredit, and the company’s website hints at more such initiatives to come.
I just had to remark on the ad for Rep. Virgil Goode I just saw while waiting for David Letterman to come on. The voiceover said “Independent-minded. Working for us.” The tagline: “Independent voice.”
By suggesting he might back out of the debate with Obama on Friday without first informing the Obama campaign, McCain seems to be doing anything but “putting politics aside.”
