Capshaw back in Ten

When a rumor comes home to roost, it’s nearly as satisfying as a perfect cup of miso soup. For many a month, Restaurantarama has been hearing these whispers: Sushi this, Blue Light Grill that. It made perfect sense to us that Coran Capshaw’s restaurant empire, which is already six properties strong, would expand before too long, and the idea of a second-floor eatery above Blue Light seemed plausible enough. But we couldn’t get Capshaw’s restaurant director, Michael Keaveny, to spill the beans (cue movie-trailer voice)… until now.

Splendora’s

At 3 o’clock in the afternoon, most civilized nations are sleeping. Since we live in America, however, we have to consume stimulants and power right through those afternoon doldrums like the dedicated capitalists that we are. A cappuccino and a cookie from Splendora’s made one recent afternoon a little less woozy. As we chewed, we […]

Get stuffed!

If you feel like this is a busy time of year, what with end-of-school events, class reunions, graduations and—don\’t forget!—all of those June weddings, just think about the busy caterers who are keeping all of these revelers well fed. Fred Bossardt, owner and chef at Simply Delicious Catering, is one of those hard-working culinary masters. From weddings to university events for 600, June is keeping Bossardt on the move.

We Ate Here!

The only thing better than the verdant, mountainous setting around Nellysford is the fact that it’s home to some pretty outstanding Italian food. We sat on the deck at D’Ambola’s on a perfect June evening, when all we needed was a little appetizer to tide us over. The fried zucchini, despite its unassuming name, was […]

The Inn at Court Square.

You don\’t have to be a guest at the Inn at Court Square to dine like a queen at lunch. The friendly patio wait staff was prompt with linens and fine silverware. We ordered sweet iced tea, a glass of Perrier and a chipotle chicken salad with fresh baby arugula, red lettuce, pulled roasted chicken and zesty dressing. The bread plate came with honey orange-zested butter, and felt almost like a dessert—as refreshing as the breeze that kicked up under the ancient oak tree.

Restaurant Gossip

First things first: Bodo’s founder Brian Fox has sold the venerable 20-year-old bagel business to his three general managers, Connie Jenson, John Kokola and Scott Smith. Fox lays out the whole story himself on page 42—but definitely stay tuned to this space in coming weeks for more behind-the-bagel coverage.

True grits

If over 20 of your favorite local restaurants, bars and food shops joined with wine and beer purveyors to offer samples of their wares under one roof, you’d be hard-pressed to find an excuse not to go, right? And, if 100 percent of the proceeds benefit the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank, there should be […]

Graphic artists (and photo nerds) have always enjoyed browsing the vast image archive at Getty Images. Well, the browsing just got a whole lot trippier. Linked off of Getty’s “Creative” search page (by way of some hypnotizing little neon graphics) is “10 Ways,” an experimental online funhouse that allows visitors to “explore” different dimensions of […]
