Designing woman

I am preparing (once again) to relocate. Once again I will not be bringing any furniture with me, just some clothes, a decorative pillow or two and some chutzpah. Naturally, there are upsides and downsides to the state of extreme brokenness that prevents one from taking one’s furniture with one when one goes. Con: No […]

The Corner of the market

For some of us, the end of August is tragic. It means the imminent closing of the pools, the coming curtain call on lazy days of shorts and flip-flops and cranky kids heading back to school. For Corner business owners, however, it means a welcome end to the summer famine. And it means massive hiring […]

Gastronomy lesson

At this point, we’ve all been eating our fair share of fresh vegetables—salads, sandwiches, grilled kebabs, more salads—and it’s time to think up some new things to do with the end-of-summer produce. Horse and Hound Gastropub‘s herbed zucchini and corn fritters put a savory, buttery finish on the summer flavors, and don’t require too much […]

We Ate Here

Satellite Ballroom, for one, has been bringing many great national acts (and their fall lineup becomes more mouth-watering each day). But if you're looking for enthusiastic local music, Wednesday nights at Orbit Billiards is (to borrow from Beck) where it's at.

Wine's world

We're not the only ones in the list-making business. Wine Spectator magazine, one of the resources for the vino-enjoying crowd, has been compiling an annual guide of the best restaurant wine lists around the globe since 1981

Tasty little package

Whenever I shoot off the "top three restaurants in Charlottesville" question to friends and acquaintances, the C&O pretty much always gets a spot. The revolving seasonal menu plus French countryside atmosphere make for a hell of a dining experience, and there’s that mysterious feeling of timelessness down in the bistro (where, incidentally, my favorite dates […]
