Despite the financial climate, local philanthropy fund Charlottesville Area Community Foundation (CACF) provided $4.2 million in grants to area’s charitable organization.
At the annual luncheon today, CACF president John Redick highlighted enhancing the quality of life in seven area counties. Another important part is the matching of philanthropic donors with their needs.
Although local philanthropy has been just as strong as in past years, 2009 has been “a difficult year,” said Redick.
This past year, the foundation has worked with donors to create 18 new funds; has awarded the second Catalyst Grant for affordable housing to the Virginia Supportive Housing; has initiated the Charlottesville Future Fund for young civic and professional leaders.
One of the new funds is the LeRoi H. Moore Fund, named after the late saxophone player for the Dave Matthews Band.
The fund will help and support charities and institutions that were important to Moore: annual scholarships to the UVA School of Nursing, Albemarle High School, North Carolina Central University, Blue Ridge Area Food Bank, Habitat for Humanity, among others.
