CACF gives $30,000 to Charlottesville alternative education program

Before WALK intervention specialist Dianna Poe accepted the Charlottesville Area Community Foundation’s inaugural Future Fund grant, she asked a student to describe the city’s alternative education program to a reporter.

"It’s frickin’ awesome," the student replied.

The 96 members of CACF’s Future Fund concurred, and awarded WALK a $30,000 grant yesterday evening in a ceremony held at The Haven. WALK was initially funded by a federal grant; the Future Fund, however, is generated from locals who contribute membership fees between $200 and $400. ("Ninety-nine of the membership dues collected each year will be granted out to nonprofit organizations in the Charlottesville area annually," reads the fund’s website.) As Poe told C-VILLE yesterday evening, however, "What I really love about this program is, it’s local."
