Better news: Fun with veggie oil

Things have been kind of contentious and grim around the blog lately, so I’m happy to take a break and bring you a feel-good post. Our art director Bill LeSueur alerted me this morning to the blog of Ross McDermott, who used to shoot photos for C-VILLE and is now involved in a very cool and ambitious project: traveling the U.S. in a vehicle powered by veggie oil, taking photos of wacky festivals. You know, real Americana stuff like corn mazes and Halloween in New Orleans and a small-town North Carolina event where citizens race wooly worms for prizes.

I then got sucked into reading the blog for like two hours, because A) Ross’s pictures are amazing, B) I love fantasizing about cross-country travel almost as much as I love cross-country travel itself, and C) it’s beautiful to see that you can do it without spending a single penny on fossil fuels. The most recent posts start here, but if you want to get some insight into the veggie-oil lifestyle read this post.

Two years ago or so, I wrote a little story for Abode about another local guy who was running a pickup truck on veggie oil, and I’m sure there are others around here. Anyone want to chime in about conversion kits, the best local sources for oil, or great adventures you’ve had in your no-gas vehicles?
