Belmont noise, payday lending and park master plans tonight at City Council

The Belmont noise controversy may pump up the volume again this evening. City Council members will hear a report from city staff about noise levels in the commercial stretch of Hinton Avenue in Belmont.

After complaints that the neighborhood’s quality of life diminished because of loud music coming mainly from Bel Rio, residents organized and brought the issue to City Council who, in March, voted to lower late-night volume to 65 decibels from 75 in Belmont and Fontaine between 11pm and 6am. Council also voted to hear reports about noise in three-month increments, with one such report coming tonight.

Also on the agenda: Council will vote on a resolution to encourage the Virginia General Assembly to limit interest rates and fees on payday loans to discourage predatory lending. Councilors will vote on naming McIntire athletic fields in honor of Carl “Chubby” Proffitt, a decorated was veteran and baseball aficionado, and hear a report on the Azalea Park Master Plan, which proposes to better manage storm water runoff, increase parking and expand the site’s dog park.
