The cold weather’s a’rolling in, which means it’s time to take a trip to your favorite local bookstore and have a look at something good. One suggestion?
Following her novella Walks With Men, UVA’s Ann Beattie finishes 2010 strong with Ann Beattie: The New Yorker Stories, a big, beautiful volume that is out tomorrow from Simon and Schuster. The 28 story collection of Beattie’s short fiction published between 1974—when she emerged, not yet 30, "with a voice so original, and so uncannily precise and prescient in its assessment of her characters’ drift and narcissism, that she was instantly celebrated as a voice of her generation"—and 2006.
Beattie’s work was rejected by the New Yorker 17 times before she was published. This new collection includes 28 stories from that magazine.
