Activist Angela Davis to spend a week in residency

Renowned civil rights activist, university professor, philosopher and historian Angela Davis will spend a week in residence at UVA and will headline a conference on prison population.

The Woodson Institute at UVA will host a symposium, "The Problem of Punishment: Race, Inequality and Justice," on April 16 and 17. Aside from being the keynote speaker, in her week of residency, Davis will also visit several classes.

In 1970, Davis went to jail after a gun registered in her name was used in the slaying of a judge. Protests followed and she was released and acquitted for all charges.

Davis is currently a graduate studies professor of history of consciousness at the University of California and presidential chair at the University of California, Santa Cruz.
