A Cosmonaut’s Ruin’s ruin, Fennell at Vinegar Hill, Olio, Star Children and Live Arts

A serious batch of movers and shakers in the arts community gathers at the Charlottesville Community Design Center tonight for the latest edition of OLIO, wherein people take to the stage armed with nothing but a slideshow and, more or less, talk about what’s happening in their work. On hand will be representatives from The Bridge, WriterHouse, Music Resource Center, UVA Art Museum and many others. It’s free, and from 8-10pm.

Matt Pamer made a nice poster.

Vinegar Hill Theatre hosts a fairly unique event tomorrow night in conjunction with opening weekend of Mao’s Last Dancer. You may have already read that the independent film, directed by Bruce Beresford of Tender Mercies and Driving Miss Daisy fame, is locally-owned ATO Pictures’ first foray into independent film distribution. After Saturday night’s 7pm show, you can ask ATO CEO Temple Fennell all about it.

Mao’s Last Dancer opens today at Vinegar Hill Theatre.

At The Southern tonight, it’s a sad swan song for the local brutes of A Cosmonaut’s Ruin, who play their last show after five years of devastation and destruction. It’s your last chance to hear what they aptly call "lyrics that read like an Asimov epic and riffs that shake the deepest regions of the cosmos." You can even meet the band at a pre-show cocktail hour—mean music, nice guys!

I wrote about the local septet We Are Star Children in this week’s Feedback column in anticipation of a show Saturday night at the Southern. It’s your first chance to pick up a copy of the band’s new EP, Love to the Wicked, which, by the way, is great.

Speaking of things written about in this week’s paper, Live Arts hosts two concerts featuring Doug Schneider and Friends this weekend. You might recognize Schneider from a whole host of Live Arts plays, including Sweeney Todd and Gypsy. The two-night affair begins today. Deetz be here.

What are you up to this weekend?
