UVA grads don’t let drops rain on their parade

This past weekend marked the University of Virginia’s 180th Final Exercises. UVA President John Casteen awarded 6,280 degrees to the excited graduates. One thing the graduates didn’t expect was inclement weather. A constant drizzle of rain washed over the Lawn, but the decision was made to keep the ceremony out in the open. According to UVA Today, finals speaker J. Harvie Wilkinson III, whose involvement with the ceremony was initially protested by some students, applauded the decision to continue outdoors. “A little rain is not going to keep us off the Lawn, is it?” he said. On Sunday, it was also time for some firsts: the doctorate of nursing practice, from the School of Nursing and the master’s in public policy from the newly established Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy, were awarded for the first time.
