DR. CHARLES HURT
Virginia Land Company
Assessed value: $132 million*
Acres: 3,155
Notable holdings: Fray’s Grant, Pavilions at Pantops, Advance Mills Farms, Mink Creek Estates, Montgomery Ridge.
In 1961, Virginia Land Company was founded by Dr. Charles Hurt, a 1954 graduate of the UVA School of Medicine. Much of Hurt’s assets are in undeveloped land, such as a prime tract of 254 verdant acres at Pantops. In addition to Virginia Land Company, Hurt, who did not return multiple calls by press time, has a spin-off planning and design firm called Dominion Development Resources.
Fun Fact: In 1990, the Washington Post called Hurt “possibly the largest land owner in Albemarle County.” Nineteen years later, he is still on top.
*Though contacted, property owner did not verify list of holdings.
