An official sketch of the suspect, compiled from previous drawings and descriptions, is released.

April 14, 2004

Charlottesville police temporarily suspend "DNA dragnet" following a lawsuit filled by a black male who claimed he was harassed during a search
for the serial rapist.

September 28, 2004

Albemarle County police open a 24-hour hotline dedicated solely to gathering information and tips regarding the serial rapist.

September 7, 2005

Christopher Lynn Matthew, charged with the rape of a UVA student attributed to the serial rapist, is released from jail after forensic evidence found him innocent.

August 13, 2007

Nathan Antonio Washington is arrested for two sexual attacks. Area police say he is suspected in other serial rapist attacks, though refuse to explicitly link him with them. Three days later, city and county police genetically linked Washington to the two attacks using his DNA.
