Albemarle County Fire Rescue and the Charlottesville Fire Department gathered at John Paul Jones Arena on September 12 to honor the 343 first responders who lost their lives in the 9/11 attacks. During the event—which this year marked the 25th anniversary of the deadliest day on American soil since Pearl Harbor 60 years earlier—participants, some in full gear, ran 2,200 steps to replicate the 110 stories firefighters climbed as they rushed into the Twin Towers to carry out rescue efforts.
