The WTJU Rock Marathon returns today

Over at WTJU, the always-entertaining Rock Marathon and fundraiser started at 6am today and runs through February 20. Don’t miss epic battles like "Vampires vs. Werewolves," "Rock Flute vs. Rock Sax" and punk label face-off "Goner vs. In the Red."

Right now, DJs are celebrating Merge Records, the Chapel Hill label that released this year’s Album of the Year, according to the Grammys: Arcade Fire’s The Suburbs. Tomorrow at 10:30am, the label Jagjaguwar, which was founded in Charlottesville but uprooted to Bloomington, Indiana, gets similar treatment.

Shows about labels are good, you might ask, but where are all the shows about artists? The Digital Milennium Copyright Act went into effect January 1, regulating stations like WTJU that broadcast over the internet from playing more than four songs from a single artist (or three songs from the same recording) in a three-hour period.

Ever thrifty, the station’s DJs found a loophole: Local groups like Sarah White, Corsair and Dzian! (I’m playing too) will perform on air throughout the week. Speaking of special guests, today at 2pm, DJ Tyler Magill welcomes one for a show called "Talking to Charlottesville about Duran Duran." Can you guess who the guest will be?
