According to sources, the University of Virginia would like to have a new football coach in place before Christmas. From what I can gather, Mike London is the front-runner to replace Al Groh at the McCue Center in Charlottesville.
The Richmond Spiders, London’s current team, play Appalachian State today in the FCS playoffs. Richmond beat State 33-13 last year in the playoffs as ASU committed 7 turnovers in the contest. So, if Richmond loses today, London could be named the new coach as soon as Monday. I look for the deal to be fairly incentive laden, and the base to be around 1.4 million bucks.
London is not a sexy hire, but he’s a damn good football coach, knows how to win with less, and how to recruit the Commonwealth. There are still some rumblings of interviews with Air Force’s Troy Calhoun, Temple’s Al Golden, and Miami’s offensive coordinator Mark Whipple, but I think London is our man. Go Hoos!
