Hey, Charlottesville: Where are all the girl bands? [VIDEO]

Chalk it up to a convergence of factors—Wednesday night’s Erin McKeown gig at The Southern, the upcoming Vivian Girls show at Outback Lodge and news that Charlottesville’s own Lauren Hoffman will release Interplanetary Traveler in January, perhaps. But I’d like to know where the local female shredders are hiding out.

I’m talking about local musicians for whom female identity plays a prominent role in the composition or performance of music. Or, for that matter, female musicians who are a noticeable minority in some of the local genres. Where are our female bluegrass players? Female jazz musicians? Female metal slayers? List your favorite local overlooked or underappreciated female musicians below, after a few videos to suit the post.

P.S. My current female MVP of the local metal scene is Marie Landragin, who reliably thrashes in Corsair (along with Leigh Ann O’Leary) and also sent along a photo of this year’s Mass Sabbath line-up. Looks ferocious:
