Neko Case is NOT performing in our city. Yet. Much to my chagrin.

Yesterday afternoon, I shared the following conspiracy theory with a certain Scrabbling C-VILLE colleague:

1. The Sadies are slated to play at the Charlottesville Pavilion on July 23.

2. Neko Case occasionally performs with The Sadies, recorded The Tigers Have Spoken with them as her backing band, and (as of yesterday) had no gig listed on her website for July 23.

3. Ergo: Holy hell, I predicted a Neko Case gig on July 23! Maybe! Right?

Turns out that I was wrong like Collision Course. Today, Neko Case’s website lists a gig in Buffalo on July 23. In related news, my heart hurts.

As a remedy, I’m heading to Norfolk on July 24 to see Case (and her lovely and sonorous bandmate, Kelly Hogan) perform. For those of you planning similar music trips this summer, here are a few shows to keep in mind:

  • Wilco and Conor Oberst share a bill at Wolf Trap on July 8. (Or, for those of you who prefer classic vitriol, Elvis Costello and his bluegrass act, The Sugarcanes, play the same spot on June 11.)
  • Forget the 9:30 Club. (It always sounds great, but I need a smaller room.) Black Cat has Bill Callahan on June 12, and his latest, Sometimes I Wish We Were an Eagle, is mellow gold. And the Handsome Furs play alongside our own Cinnamon Band on July 10. Also, have you tried the downstairs bar? Try the downstairs bar.
  • Bonnaroo. And for more tips on that, here’s Rufus Leaking, a sheep that’s tight with Henry Rollins:

Now, what summer concert trips are you planning? What’s worth a drive? A flight? A boat?
