In a little more than a week, the third annual Legal Food Frenzy will kick off at law firms near you. And what is this frenzy, you ask?
Two years ago, former Attorney General and current gubernatorial candidate Bob McDonnell, the Virginia Bar Association Young Lawyers Division, and The Federation of Virginia Food Banks created the first annual Legal Food Frenzy, a competition among law firms to raise food and funds for local food banks.
Yesterday, recently appointed Attorney General Bill Mims made an appearance at McGuire Woods law firm to advertise this year’s effort.
“The need has never been greater,” said Mims. Indeed. And this year’s goal reflects the demand: 1.5 million pounds of food, up from 1 million in 2008. “I hope that people give generously,” said Mims.
More about the regional food after the jump.
Attorney General Bill Mims was elected by the General Assembly in February 2009.
Martin White, CEO of the Blue Ridge Food Bank Network says that the demand for help has increased 17 percent. “It goes without saying that in this climate, the competition is a great benefit for us,” says White. “We are serving about 85,000 people per month,” in all seven regional food banks. The Blue Ridge Area Food Bank serves about 130,000 people, 49,000 children and 65,000 working poor.
Facts: in 2007, the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank Network distributed 8.5 million pounds of food, in 2008, the number jumped to 10.5 million and for 2009, with a 38 percent increase, it is estimated that 14 million pounds of food will be distributed.
