Charlottesville ranked a top 10 college sports town

Rejoice, local sports fans! Sure, the Cavaliers have yet to impress this season in the big money sports, but apparently this is still a great place for amateur athletics.

Forbes magazine has ranked Charlottesville in the top 10 college sports towns in the nation.

Perhaps the ranking inspired the men’s basketball team, which ended an eight game losing streak by upsetting No. 12 Clemson 85-81 in overtime yesterday. Sylven Landesberg scored six of his 23 points in overtime. The Cavaliers’ only other ACC victory was against bottom-dweller Georgia Tech.

But the ranking may have had the opposite effect on the women’s basketball team. The Cavaliers lost to No. 9 Maryland on Thursday night and again on Sunday against NC State.

Here is the complete list:
1-     Ann Arbor, Michigan – University of Michigan
2-     Palo Alto, California – Stanford University
3-     Madison, Wisconsin – University of Wisconsin
