Your tax dollars, at work

Worked in the county for: Almost six years

Resides in: Fluvanna

Job title: Elections Manager. Works for the Voters Registration and Elections department. Schermerhorn does election-official recruiting and training, works on polling place issues. “Starting about August, it’s flat-out [busy], but it’s actually kind of busy constantly.”

Best of times: “I like working with my election officials, talking with them.”

Worst of times: “When I have to come in at 7am the day after an election to help [election officials] bring back all of their election materials. But they’re probably thinking that’s the worst of times too. It’s really early after a really late night. I usually get home around 10pm and ask my husband who won because I’ve been too involved.”

Strangest moment on the job: “When one of our polling places thought the election started at 6 at night. They got a little miscommunication. People were voting on the hood of the chief election official’s car until help could arrive—which it arrived fairly soon. That was probably the craziest thing that’s happened.”

If she were a superhero, she’d be: “Wonder Woman, of course, with a red, white and blue outfit. I would have, like, eight arms to do lots of things at once.”
