Your tax dollars, at work

Worked for the county for: One month

Resides in: Charlottesville

Job title: Civil deputy clerk. Melampy’s primary duty is to process, file and organize all civil lawsuits and divorces in the county. Daily, she interacts with attorneys, plaintiffs and defendants and says the interaction with people is one of the reasons she likes her job.

Best of times: “The familiar faces I work with over the course of a lawsuit. You really develop a good working rapport and want resolution for all parties involved.”

Worst of times: “The overwhelming load of paperwork we get in this office can make it really difficult to stay organized. We have stacks of paper everywhere and the longer a lawsuit is pending, the more paperwork!”

Strangest moments on the job: “We have a divorce case that has been going on since 1996, and although the divorce is final, the involved parties continue to wage legal war against each other with ongoing lawsuits. Their case has over 3′ of stacked paper documents filling up five boxes!”

If she were a super hero she’d be: Super Organizational Woman. “I would get paperwork done in the blink of an eye.”
