The MacDonalds have occupied two rooms at the Residence Inn since August 2006, though the hotel contends that they haven’t paid since November.

Plaintiff: Marriott International, Inc.

Defendants: Terrence MacDonald, et al

Court: Charlottesville Circuit Court

What’s at issue: Whether Terrence MacDonald and three family members overstayed their welcome at the Marriott Residence Inn on Millmont Street. Specifically, the hotel contends that the MacDonalds stopped paying in November for two rooms they’ve had since August 2006. The MacDonalds say they’ve paid up. There’s also a strange conflict over whether the MacDonalds negotiated a reduced price of $109 for $149 rooms—hotel management says they did, but the MacDonalds say they didn’t.

What’s at stake: $22,369.73 (and counting), the amount the hotel says that the family owes for staying in the rooms. The suit demands $109 a night per room be added to the count until the case is resolved.

What’s the status: Both sides have fired initial legal volleys, and now it’s time for either the court to step in or a settlement to be reached.
