What’s going on this weekend?

Since there’s little one can say that hasn’t already been said about the famed violinist Itzhak Perlman, who performs at the Paramount on Sunday night, here’s a joke once told to me by a bluegrass musician about Perlman’s instrument of choice. Q: What is the difference between a violin and a fiddle? A: A violin has strings, but a fiddle’s got strangs. Ya dig? Details are here.

If you’ve been following the last couple weeks of Feedback columns, then you already know that two pieces of locally-written theater shows opened this weekend. First, Mapping the Dark opens at Live Arts, a multimedia show based on Ros Casey’s 2003 McGuffey installation of same name. Read more about it here.

Second, local screenwriter and comedian Denise Stewart presents her one-woman show Dirty Barbie and Other Girlhood Tales through the weekend at the Hamner. (More here.) In it, Stewart explores her childhood troubles with a bold sense of humor. Hamner is here.

Even if you can’t afford to buy art, you can buy a ticket to Second Street Gallery ‘s triennial New Art Auction. And if you can’t afford that, still stop by and check out some of the goodies there, including work by locals like Sharon Shapiro, Dean Dass and Will Wiley, plus highlights from some of the excellent shows the gallery has hosted in recent years. Find about more here.

The weekend’s most buzzed-about show is the TV on the Radio gig Saturday night at the Jefferson Theater. The band is on tour in support of its forthcoming album Nine Types of Light, out next week, which features a classic-leaning single "Will Do." Listen below. Tickets are here; I’d be surprised if it didn’t sell out.
