Though he graduated from UVA in the early ’80s and headed west shortly thereafter, Tom Shadyac has kept his finger in a lot of pots around Charlottesville, from producing Evan Almighty, one of the most expensive comedies ever made, in the region, to donating some of his personal fortune to create the Haven at First and Market.
When we last caught up with the frequent Jim Carrey collaborator, he had just recovered from a debilitating cycling accident that turned his life on its head. The personal journey he endured was the source for a film called I AM, which screened at the Virginia Film Festival last year, which he says basically asks two questions: What’s wrong with our world and what can we do about it? Naturally, those big questions—and Shadyac’s move from an opulent mansion to a doublewide trailer by the beach—piqued Oprah Winfrey’s interest, and Shadyac landed on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" last week.
