Wahoos Nearly Upset by Norfolk State at the JPJ! Hoos Win 50-49

Well, I’m the first person to admit when I have been wrong about something, and man, I was wrong about Monday nights Virginia-Norfolk State hoops game.

Freshman K.T. Harrell missed two huge free-throws as the clock ticked away, but Assane Sene was there for the tip-in to secure the victory for the Hoos.

I predicted the Hoos would beat the Spartans 80-50, and that every single Wahoo from walk-on to bus driver would see meaningful action Monday night at the JPJ.

The game was not in hand for Virginia till the last tick of the clock. Norfolk State had a chance as time expired to win the game, which would have been one of the greatest upsets in the history of UVA basketball, but their long distance attempt fell short as time expired.

It certainly would have been the worst loss of the Tony Bennett era at Virginia, perhaps even more painful than the heinous Liberty loss at home a few years ago.

Norfolk State came into the contest 1-7, and the Hoos had just beaten BCS opponent Oregon Friday night, and were riding a four game winning streak.

In the first-half, UVA shot a paltry 29.6% from the floor, and Norfolk State shot an even less spectacular 25%. For the game the Spartans out-rebounded Virginia 42-36, and even had more blocks (6-4).

The Hoos were led again by Mustapha Farrakhan with 18 points, and there was no other Virginia player in double-figures. Man, when was the last time you could say that?

Virginia (8-3) and the Spartans (1-8) both turned the ball over 11 times. Norfolk State was an incredibly horrific 2-16 from three-point-land. The Hoos weren’t much better, finishing 7-22 from beyond the arch.

Another quick turnaround for Tony Bennett’s Wahoos as they play Seattle Wednesday night at the JPJ. Go Hoos! Hey, a win is just a win, right? Whether you win by thirty or just one?
