The ACC Coastal-Division 1st Place Wahoos, beat Maryland 20-9 in miserable conditions in College Park today. Virginia (3-3), did not give up a touchdown to Maryland, and had a tremendous effort all-around on the defensive side of the ball. In the last three games, all wins for the Hoos, Virginia’s defense has only given up one meaningless touchdown to Indiana, and none to Carolina or Maryland.
The Hoos were led by Senior fullback Rashawn Jackson who rushed 19 times for 90 yards and a 1 touchdown. Senior quarterback Jameel Sewell (sacked six times), spent most of the second half on the sideline using crutches, after spraining his ankle. Third year back-up QB, Marc Verica, came in to replace Sewell and was able to not make any mistakes as the “Cardiac Cavs” found a way to get the win.
The player of the game on defense for the Wahoos was 4th year Nate Collins, who had a thundering, 32 yard interception for a touchdown, and was credited with 9 tackles (5 solo, 4 asst), as well as a sack. Dom Joseph also had a pick for the Hoos to end Maryland’s hope for a comeback.
Robert Randolph, continued his perfect season kicking field goals for the Hoos, and contributed 8 points to the win. Jimmy Howell did not have one of his better games punting the ball in the atrocious field conditions for Virginia, but in the fourth quarter had a great kick that pinned the Terrapins back at their own nine yard-line.
I caught up with Sewell for a few minutes after the game in the media-tent and he said he had a sprained ankle, and that he was sore, but happy!
Al Groh and Company continue to find a way to keep October the most exciting month of the year for the Wahoo faithful. Virginia is 12-1 in their last 13 games in the month of October!
Up next for the Hoos is the dreaded triple-option attack of Georgia Tech, in a Noon game in Charlottesville. The Rambling Wreck from Atlanta has just beaten the Hokies to keep the streak alive of NO National Championships in Blacksburg. Somehow the drive home from College Park will be all the sweeter my friends. Go Hoos! stats.washingtonpost.com/cfb/boxscore.asp
