Virginia nonprofit joins cause to stop construction of WalMart on the Wilderness Battlefield

Preservation Virginia, a private preservation nonprofit, joined the dissent over the proposed construction of a Wal-Mart Supercenter near the Wilderness Battlefield in Orange County, reports the Associated Press.

”The proposed Wal-Mart would degrade the rural character of the battlefield, promote commercial sprawl, and drastically increase traffic through the heart of the park," the nonprofit said in a statement.

In a recent feature story, C-VILLE covered the controversy surrounding the battlefield, which Preservation Virginia puts on its 2009 list of the most endangered public sites. Also on the list, which was released today, is Charlottesville’s McIntire Park.
