Virginia ends 9 game losing streak with ACC Tournament win against BC

Virginia found a way to keep their season going as they won their opening round ACC match-up against BC today in Greensboro. It was their first ACC Tournament win since the 2005-2006 season. BC was a 3 point favorite, but Virginia battled back from tremendous odds to win.

Virginia was led by 6-0 shooting guard from Philly Sammy Zeglinski who shot 50% from three-point-land and scored eight points in the first five minutes. Sammy finished with 21 points as he looked great from outside as well as driving to the hole. The Hoos also got strong performances from Mike Scott (11 points), Mustapha Farrakhan (10 points), Jerome Meyinsse (12 points, and Jeff Jones (14 points).

BC only shot 8 free throws (7-8) in the game, but did out-rebound Virginia 32-30. The Eagles normally have four players in double-figures, but only had three guys score more than ten today. Rakin Sanders, the 6-5 G/F from Pawtucket, RI had an outstanding game as he finished with 22 points, three assists, and 3-5 three-point shooting. Joe Trapani did not have a good game this afternoon and he only scored two points from the line as he was 0-7 from the field.

The Hoos were 23-53 (43%) from the field, and were only 8-21 from beyond the arch, but made them when it counted. The win made it very likely that Virginia will get an invitation to the NIT Tournament which starts next week.
