It’s no secret that the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is in a world of hurt. But how much hurt was made painfully clear yesterday when VDOT announced yesterday a series of dramatic cutbacks in response to a $2.6 billion dollar revenue shortfall over the next six years.
Next month, VDOT will layoff 450 hourly employees—but that’s just the beginning. A comprehensive plan, “Blueprint for the Future,” presented to the Commonwealth Transportation Board, calls for the layoff of 1,000 full-time employees and 450 hourly workers over the next 18 months.
The second phase of the plan calls for staffing changes and restructuring: employees in the construction development program, field operations and administrative functions will see cuts in its staff. Additionally, VDOT will close 15 residency offices and 36 equipment repair facilities.
