The Lighting of the Lawn is a UVA tradition that started in 2001 in response to the 9/11 attacks. Last year, UVA students, with the help of Dominion Virginia Power, made the switch from incandescent light bulbs to LED, for an estimated savings of 1,300 kWh of electricity. Here’s more on the Lighting of the Lawn by the numbers.
Number of people needed to string the lights: 2
Number of lights put up this year: About 12,700
Structures covered by the lights: The Rotunda, the columns and arcades of the Lawn and every pavilion.
Visitors to the Lighting of the Lawn last year: 6,000
Total number of hours the lights will remain on: About 420 hours—from 4:30pm to 7:30am from December 8 to January 4 Estimated cost of lighting of the Lawn this year: Although UVA does not individually meter the light circuits, “based on an amp meter estimate, we believe it is in the $20* range with the LED lights. This is 1/5th the cost of the lights previously used,” according to Carol Wood, UVA spokesperson.
Total lifespan of each LED light bulb: 50,000 hours, as opposed to 3,000 hours for the incandescent light bulb.
*$20! That’s what Carol Wood said. Striking, no?
