The Virginia Women’s Lacrosse team will honor slain student Yeardley Love by retiring her jersey number in a ceremony on March 6 at Klöckner Stadium, before the team’s game againt Penn State.
"I hope our fans can attend and join all of us—our team, Yeardley’s closest friends and her family—as we remember and honor her," said head coach Julie Myers in a UVA news release. "Yeardley’s presence and influence on all of us will be forever cherished and held deep in our hearts."
Love was found dead in her 14th Street apartment on May 3. The same day, fellow student and UVA lacrosse player George Huguely was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with her death. He is currently held at the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail.
In December, Charlottesville General District Court Judge Robert Downer denied a request by Huguely’s defense to review Love’s medical records. A private medical expert had testified that Love’s Adderall prescription could have interacted with an arrythmogenic medicine and affected her heartbeat. In January, prosecution filed five additional charges against Huguely. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for April 11.
