The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports today that UVA tied Columbia University for first place in black student enrollment at “top-ranked” universities. Black students made up 11.4 percent of UVA’s current first-year class, according to the Journal of Blacks in Higher Education. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, which ranked first last year, and Vanderbilt University were third and fourth, respectively.

John Blackburn, dean of admissions at UVA, told the Times-Dispatch that he expects those numbers to grow now that UVA dropped its early decision deadline. As reported in C-VILLE, UVA toured with Harvard and Princeton to encourage low-income students to apply.
“We won’t really know how successful it was until we get to the summer when all the financial-aid packages are worked out,” Blackburn said in the story. “But we hope to see an increase of low-income students, many of whom are black.”
