UVA students charged with kidnapping [November 27]

Two UVA students have been charged with kidnapping after they abducted a man in the Northern Virginia area, tied him up in a hotel room, and demanded a $500,000 ransom, The Washington Post reports today. Guanyu Lu and Baichuan Shu, both 19, allegedly used the victim’s cellphone to make their demands, and as a result AT&T was able to provide police an approximate location. After staking out a motel, police knocked on the door of a room registered to a Charlottesville resident shortly after midnight on Thanksgiving, and found the victim—also a Chinese national—bound and gagged with duct tape in the bathtub. Lu and Shu were arrested and arraigned yesterday in Fairfax County General District Court and charged with abduction and intent to extort money.
